ARD, short for Automatic Rescue Device, is a mandated device which every lift manufacturer in Pune, be it small lift for homes or large industrial elevators, including car elevators, as well as manufacturers of elevator parts and components in Pune, have to install in their machines. Without these, not only are the lifts unsafe for everyone, be it users or maintenance staff, they are outright illegal to sell.
As to what they do, let us give you a detailed list of the sequence of event leading to their coming into use.
1. Lift encounters loss of power and suddenly comes to a halt with a noticeable jerk
2. Emergency lights get activated on their own, providing enough illumination within the lift cabin. These use batteries.
3. In the meantime, the ARD takes effect (it needs about 30 seconds to get activated) and will take the lift either up or down to the nearest floor that has a door for safe evacuation.
4. As mentioned above, the elevator moves to the nearest exit, a process that tales place after about 60 seconds of the lift coming to a halt, provided no one tries to force open the elevator door, in which case the lift simply sits where it is.
5. ARD takes the elevator or lift to the nearest door, which opens for users to exit.
6. ARD closes the door.
7. An emergency rescue operation for which the ARD is needed comes to an end.
8. With the resumtion of electricity supply, the empty car travels to the bottom-most floor to resume normal operations.
From the above steps, it is very clear that the ARD is a safety device that needs to be installed in every elevator, big or small, commercial, residential or industrial, old, new, or ultra-modern.
In fact, it is very much possible that without a functioning ARD in place, the very act of installing an elevator may be deemed illegal. Societies and lift and building owners should take note and do the right thing.
